Being rejected from your dream business school hurts — you worked tirelessly on your application for months and have no idea where you went wrong. Do not despair, we are here to help you discern the reason. Improve your MBA application after rejection by exploring common pitfalls and working with our consultants to make your next round the winning one.
Why Was Your MBA Application Rejected?
There are many reasons for MBA application rejections, some of which may be more about the school than they are about you. Still, there are plenty of ways you can strengthen your application materials and display the type of candidate they want to see. Here are the five top reasons we see for MBA rejections.
Problem 1 — You Lack a Compelling Story
Your reader should gain a clear view of who you are, your passions and why an MBA will help you achieve them. Your story is how you set yourself apart — if it hits the same notes as everyone else’s, it will be challenging for you to make a memorable impression. This does not mean you have to have traveled to developing countries and saved dying children. You simply have to get creative with how you present yourself.
Problem 2 — Your Application Is Inconsistent
Every part of your application should contribute to the same vision, including your essays, resume, extracurriculars and LORs. The strengths you display should match those your recommenders highlight, and the passions and hobbies you discuss should tie into your expertise and interests. If any parts of your application stand out in contrast, this can raise a red flag about your sincerity and intentions.
Problem 3 — Your Test Scores Are Not Ideal
This one may be more obvious — even if you have the perfect application, you may not meet your dream school’s ideal without the GMAT/GRE/EA score to back it up. While there are always outliers on either end, set reasonable expectations. As you craft your second chance plan, think about whether there are classes you can take to demonstrate your strongest skills or if a tutor may help you better prepare for the GMAT/GRE. In addition, you may need to expand your horizons. The average student should apply to at least five schools, including safe options and reaches.
Problem 4 — The Numbers Were Not in Your Favor
Sometimes it is about the numbers. Diversity thrives in MBA classrooms, and at Personal MBA Coach, we strive to craft compelling narratives for overrepresented groups. Still, schools cannot fill entire classes with former MBB consultants. This “numbers game” is a significant reason why we encourage candidates to expand their school lists.
Problem 5 — You Lack Leadership Experience
Leaders thrive in the fast-paced world of business, and MBA programs know it. Those with prior leadership experience have a definitive advantage in MBA applications, but if you do not have the experience, all is not lost. You can prove yourself as a potential leader in many ways, such as taking on informal leadership roles, mentoring or even stepping up in any current positions you hold. As you plan for your next round of applications, consider how you can improve your leadership opportunities and articulate them in your essays.
