Yale’s Silver Scholars Program is unique among deferred programs in that applicants who are admitted start their MBA immediately, spending the first year developing managerial, leadership, and finance skills through the SOM MBA core curriculum. Then, they go into the professional world for one or more years, and return after that to complete their MBA, taking electives in the SOM and elsewhere in the university to round out preparation for their goals. The sequence of study and work makes it possible for students to increasingly refine their goals while tailoring their skills and preparation accordingly in the academic and professional setting.
Applicants to the Silver Scholars program are generally mature college seniors who have already made a difference and distinguished themselves in a particular field of interest pre-professionally: some have had significant internships while others have gained experience through SMEs, family firms, start-ups, and NGOs. Some have started their own ventures or passionately served their communities. Yale seeks diversity in pursuits and preparation.
While the Silver Scholars program is designed for students who are in the process of completing or recently completed their bachelor’s, full-time master’s, or other graduate degree, and who have no prior full-time work experience (with the exception of internships or co-op experiences), exceptions are made by the admissions committee: for example, college students who took a gap year to work (even full time) can still apply. Students finishing medical or law school or a PhD program must apply as regular MBA candidates.
The Yale Silver Scholars Application Process
If your degree will be conferred between August 1, 2024 and July 31, 2025, you may apply in any round of the 2024-2025 application cycle. Applicants to the Silver Scholars program follow the same application process as the regular Yale applicants (with some minor variations in the application itself).
