Wharton Moelis Advance Access MBA Essay 1: How do you plan to use the Wharton MBA program to help you achieve your future professional goals? You might consider your past experience, short- and long-term goals, and resources available at Wharton. (500 words)
Wharton’s first essay question is what Personal MBA Coach calls a “goals” essay. Check out the most common MBA essay types here. This is your chance to tell Wharton more about your career aspirations. This includes your pre-MBA, short-term and long-term plans. While the Wharton Admissions Team does not expect you to have it all figured out (especially without substantial career experience), applicants should have a vision for their careers and be as specific as possible while outlining this for Wharton.
It is also expected that you touch upon your past on-campus leadership and internship experience to the extent that they are relevant to your future objectives. You do not, however, need to include everything you have done here! Instead, focus on the highlights and how they have prepared you to achieve your pre- and post-MBA goals.
Finally, you want to tell Wharton where they come in! What skills gaps do you hope an MBA will help you close? The more specific you can be, the better. So take the time to research all that Wharton has to offer and outline the specific classes, clubs and other resources you will take advantage of on campus. Be sure to avoid long lists here, however.
Do not include a laundry list. Instead, carefully think through how each offering will allow you to fill in your skill and/or experience gaps. Be sure to show an understanding of Wharton’s culture here. Avoid writing vague statements and copying and pasting content from other MBA application essays.
Wharton Moelis Advance Access MBA Essay 2: Taking into consideration your background – personal, professional, and/or academic – how do you plan to make specific, meaningful contributions to the Wharton community? (400 words)
A strong answer to Wharton’s second Moelis Advance Access MBA essay question will give Wharton insight into your most significant accomplishments and your most unique attributes and paint a clear picture as to how these will enrich the Wharton community.
If you are particularly proud of something on your resume, consider expanding on this here. Similarly, if you have a unique talent, strong extracurricular accomplishments and/or impressive on-campus leadership experience, the second essay is a great place to share this with Wharton admissions.
If you are struggling to think about what to write, think broadly here about what makes you stand out from your peers and where you have devoted the most effort in the past.
Questions to ask yourself might include:
- What clubs have you joined on campus?
- How were you involved in your local community?
- Did you have a unique internship?
- What are your hobbies?
- Did you grow up in a unique environment?
Then, consider how you might share your passions, experiences, and successes at Wharton. Be specific! Tell Wharton what clubs you hope to join and what role you will play. Or think about how you might enrich the local community. Before writing this essay, take the time to learn more about Wharton and the school’s diverse offerings. This will help you to detail your potential contributions.
As with essay 1, do not simply list items! Select a few of your top ideas and be sure that they flow naturally from the uniquenesses you outlined earlier in the essay.
Optional Essay: Please use this space to share any additional information about yourself that cannot be found elsewhere in your application and that you would like to share with the Admissions Committee. This space can also be used to address any extenuating circumstances (e.g., unexplained gaps in work experience, choice of recommenders, inconsistent or questionable academic performance, areas of weakness, etc.) that you would like the Admissions Committee to consider.
